Phil Curtin's landmark study has lost little value over several decades. It presented a neo-abolitionist view of slavery and emancipation one year before K. Stampp's "Peculiar Institution" did the same with US slavery. Thorough research reveals bitter conflicts between a declining plantocracy and liberated Afro-Jamaicans (and allies of both groups) determined to give real meaning to freedom. The struggle for economic and religious autonomy culminated in the Morant Bay Rebellion and the demise of self-government (always strictly limited) in 1865. The class and racial tensions remain largely unresolved. The 1950s-era style of history of ideas seems a bit old-fashioned now. There's been much insightful study of the issues raised in "TJ" since then, not least by Curtin's students, many of whom became distinguished historians. Both book and author created firm foundations for major advances in understanding slavery, colonialism, tropical and world history.
