I saw the movie 'Thank You For Smoking' years ago before I read the book. So from what I remember the book/movie are compatible and the movie helped me to put faces to the characters. I like the different and quirky premise of this book and the writing is OK and flows to make an engaging and funny book that showed a side of lobbying in DC I'd never known before including the gun & alcohol lobbies. I looked forward to reading ity every nite and will keep it on my bookshelf and read it again in the future. Also I want to see the movie again!

Good plot, well told with excellent humor and all loose ends tied up expertly. Just the right length and stopped well in time before it got tedious.
On of the best of Buckley's picaresque sendoffs on the political culture of DC. The years have hardly diminished its keen observations; indeed the author should be drawing royalties for the plots in 'House of Cards.'
Buckley offers Olympic class satire, finding great sport among the hurly burly of lobbying. One would have greatly liked to see his protagonist as a guest on “Firing Line.”
I picked up this book to read for my short flight to Miami from NY. I was so engrossed in it that when we landed, I didn't want to get off the plane but continue reading! Originally published 16 years ago, I never felt it was dated reading it today. Funny, witty and absolutely a joy to read, this is the BEST satirical novel I have ever read! The book is only 272 pages, so it's very easy to digest. I also loved the movie, but I loved the book even more. I am now a Christopher Buckley fan!
This pointed tale of bad things made good is funny, sad but a very memorable read. Characters were phenomenal. If you like Carl Hiassen you will love this story.
christopher buckley writes very humorous political satire. they are short and very entertaining, with only a mild dose of a political message underneath. this one has the same premise as the movie but the story deviates quite a bit, they are both very good in their own right.
Christopher Buckley's novel is romp with excellent satire, but lacking in the area of a thriller. While I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to attain a degree in political science, enjoys law and politics, or simply needs a good laugh, I would discourage anyone who desires a true thriller. While the mystery within the book is quickly wrapped up (more on the side of the reader than the characters), it is also introduced rather quickly, and is not the focus of the novel. I would have enjoyed more, but all decent things must come to an end.
