I have to be honest here with this review by prefacing that I didn’t actually read the blurb before reading it. I picked it up on a whim and didn’t really look too closely at the genre or blurb so my expectations were very bare and I had no idea what I was walking into.The book starts off like any sort of mid-life-crisis-y sort of tale. Julian, our narrator, has left his cushy life for a rural mountain town. Events unravel from there and it turns into a bit of a thriller. The thriller part of it was interesting/surprising for me because I had no idea it was that type of book, but now reading the blurb it is very easy to anticipate when/how it would happen.
The writing of the novel was very good. Paced well—I didn’t feel bored reading it. I was engaged and wanted to continue reading to see what would happen. An interesting problem and question was posed that Julian had to respond to. I’m slightly displeased at how he did and how it ended, but that’s how it goes sometimes.
Another problem I had was how ineffectual Julian is. As a narrator he is pretty solid at describing what is going on but he really isn’t that observant—he is very naive. To be expected of a person with his life up to the events of the book, but sometimes I was really questioning his judgement. If he had perfect judgement, however, the book wouldn’t exist, so someone had to hold the idiot ball, as they say.
I didn’t feel any of these flaws detracted from my reading of the book. It was a very light read. I don’t imagine myself going back to it. It isn’t fantastic. Like I enjoyed reading it but not in any great substantial way that would make it memorable. If you are looking for a simple read for a lazy afternoon, this would definitely fit and I recommend it to you.

I really enjoyed this novel. The descriptions of characters, situations and environment were designed to make you feel like you were there. You really get the sense that the author knows the area he's writing about. I didn't want to put it down; I had to keep turning the page to see what what would happen next. Highly recommended for a fairly quick and satisfying story.
The book starts off a little slow a first but it becomes very interesting as the story moves along. It challenges readers to ponder a lot of things about the human element and being caught up into the modern societal system. It will make you wonder if the main character really got the resolution he wanted or deserved.
This is the fourth book i've read by Mr. Neumann--and the best one yet. The Call of the Mountain, is a tale of a trapped man, looking for excape in the mountains of Colorado, but ends up finding himself more trapped than before. The settings are real, the characters remind you of friend and foe, and the suspense is enough to keep you up past your bed time. All pistons are firing on this one...great work Mr. Neumann.
Neumann continues to surprise me with his work. He can be funny, he can be deep, and now he's shown me he can write a page-turner that is difficult to put down. I read this instead of watching football on two different days. Yes, I had the game on in the background but was more interested in the book. I woke up thinking about it. A suspenseful book with teeth. I can't wait to see what he does next.
Tremendous writing. I felt like I was watching a movie. I haven't felt this drawn into a book for a long time. My wife is upset with me because all I have been doing for the past 3 days was reading this book. Usually I prefer non-fiction, but I love the mountains and Colorado. I felt like I was there while reading this book. Loved the plot but the scenery described made me feel calm like I feel when I'm in the mountains.
This is a very realistic plot which far too many suspense thriller don't contain. The funny thing about his opening is that I could see many people taking up and leaving the life they knew and venturing out as did the main character. I found his writing style very readable, he keeps you engaged. I thought he could have actually done more with this story, but what he does with it is very good. The opening sequence is exactly how I would envision me and my wife engaged in a similar scenario. The writer has talent so I hope he pursues this genre further as I will be on the look out for his future titles.
The Call of the Mountain was a good, not great read. While the mechanics of the story were fine, I felt that the author missed a chance to enhance the feel of the area a bit more, go a bit deeper than some of the surface descriptions that those who have lived there will go, “Yeah, that’s right,” but those who haven’t probably won’t get a true feel of the place. That doesn’t mean there weren’t some nice touches, the being out of breath, the increased appetite, and the ease with which lowlanders can get drunk at altitude. I’ve lived in Boulder and been to the real places in the story. More would have made this book standout better. Julian was drawn a bit denser than I thought he should or could have been. He was slow on the uptake to what was going on which irked me a bit. But the Rambo cop at the end just didn’t feel right. Nor did the add on chapters after the climax. If he felt he had to wrap things up a bit more, I feel there should have been a stronger lead into those issues and resolutions. It felt like a mild hint there might be a follow-up novel. While I can still give this book a middle-grade 4, I’m not sure I’d sit through another Julian adventure.
